“The Old Brewery” as a documentary will be a feature length film that tells the story of the Olympia Brewery, which has sat vacant and abandoned in Tumwater Washington since 2003. The Olympia Brewery played a role in the local community as a third place for many, the brewery offered free tours with free drinks where all were welcome which had been very traditional to many. Of course, the Olympia Brewery was best known for producing Olympia beer though it also produced several other smaller brands as well. The company had been family and locally owned by the Shmidt’s since 1896 until they were forced to sell to a larger corporation in 1983. After switching hands once again in 1999 the Olympia Brewery was permanently closed in 2003. Hundreds of people, many teary eyed, had gathered near the facilities boiler room building to witness the last 5 o-clock whistle blow which was something that was previously heard from across town every day since. Today the Olympia Brewery sits abandoned. After 20 years of natural decay, vandalism, and even a large fire that engulfed one of the buildings the brewery is considered an eyesore, and people want to know what’s next, which will be covered in this film.
